Devilfish Mask Progress with Fred Fulmer Tlingit Artist

In this video I'm talking about the Devilfish Mask. My wife Ivy wanted to learn how to carve. She is helping carve the suckers, paint them and glue on the Abalone. Ivy's contribution to this project has been ongoing. Her input of design ideas are greatly appreciated. I'm recording all sides to capture the scope of this project. This mask has been fun and challenging to create.

Laying Out Operculum Shells with Fred Fulmer Tlingit Artist -
Ancestors Totem Pole

In this video Fred Fulmer is looking at the Ancestors Totem and visualizing how he plans to inlay 140 Operculum shells. Operculum shells are a Hue of White naturally. These White shells when inlayed on a Black background such as a border along a Totem pole pops out due to the contrast of color. These Operculum inlays will be the last of the major step in completing this Totem project.

Seagulls Lay Eggs On This Island Glacier Bay Alaska

Seagulls Lay Eggs On This Island Glacier Bay Alaska

In this video: I'm on one of the smaller more intimate cruise ships. ACL American Cruise Line carrying 163 passengers. Being on a smaller cruise ship allows the ship to go into areas of Glacier Bay that the big Ships can't go. Here at South Marble island the Constellation ACL ship is able to circle the island. This island is a very importand landmark for the Xuna Tlingits. This is where we would harvest Seagull eggs since time immemorial. The Xuna's would gather these eggs in May of each year, which represented the end of a long winter season and marked the beginning of Harvesting time. The Seagull eggs were an important part of the Xuna Tlingit diet. My mom would share memories of gathering eggs here at South Marble island. This was a training ground for the younger generation to learn how to gather the eggs. My mom talked about it was her job to scale the island since it was easier than the areas that were cliffs. She was 12 years old then. Those that were 8-12 yrs old would learn how to gather the eggs. There is a method to gathering. When Glacier Bay became a Federal park. Harvesting of eggs came to a stop. Due to the migratory bird ACT. My Uncle told me that "we have to poach our eggs twice now, before we can eat them". Mountain Goats In Glacier Bay Alaska

Mountain Goats In Glacier Bay Alaska

In this video: As we make our way into the 65 miles of waterway of Glacier Bay. All the cruise ships slow down as we come up too Janwu Aani or Gloomy Knob, this is where the Xuna Tlingits would come to harvest Moutain goats since time immemorial. This is an important landmark for the Xuna's. As we approach Janwu Aani, I would go with the ranger to the Bridge where the Captain and the Mates would drive the ship. Janwu Aani would be on our starbard side or the right side of the ship. On many of the ships the crew on the bridge, along with the ranger and myself would be looking through binoculars and as we spotted mountain goats we would point them out on the PA system so the passengers can see them as well. This is where the Mountain Goats live, they are protected from their predators the Brown Bear here. As we approach Janwu Aani I woud get on the PA and share a couple of paragraghs in my Tlingit language describing the importance of this area is to the Xuna's and how we would use the Mountain Goats meat, fur, horns etc., then I would translate it into English. You can see a couple of Mountain Goats in this video. Sometimes we would see 11-12, sometimes 3-4, 1 or 2 , and sometimnes none. Sometimes the fog would be thck and the visibility was nill. So if we were able to spot some Goats, it was a Good day!
