FEMALE SHAMAN MASK

"We can add additional text here if needed"

I got the idea for this mask while living in Juneau. I went to see the Mask exhibit that Sealaska Heritage was showing. When I went into the exhibit I saw this one mask that just pulled me into it. It was a Shaman mask from the late 1800's. I studied it and liked the awesome ears on it. I decided the next mask I carved will have ears. This mask as I was carving and removing wood. There was a small pin point that appeared right below the center of the mouth.

As I removed more wood, that pinpoint grew to be a good sized knot. I didn't know this knot was there, but as it turned out I couldn't have placed it more in the center if I tried. So I made the design around it. It turned out to be  a Labret that the Female would wear. I called it "The Female Shaman"

Fred Jr. is learning to carve from his dad. Here were faceting the mask, getting it ready for a design.
