The Stonington gallery was having their end of the year December show. So I decided to carve a moon mask that would represent my moms homeland of Glacier Bay. I wanted to capture the beauty and rawness of the land in Alaska in the Winter time.
So I chose to carve a winter moon with the cold wind blowing out of it's mouth, and wind/wave fine line on it's face.
Surrounded by the snow falling (operculum shells) on top. The next figure down represents the wind. Then the night stars. The upside down faces represents icebergs floating in the bay.
My description of this mask is " The Glacier Bay Winter Moon looks down and Smiles at the Icebergs floating in the Bay during the wintery nights".
This is a mask that Fred carved. He wants to make a larger version of it, but add different finished details, since he has more cedar wood to work with
Fred Jr. is learning to carve from his dad. Here were faceting the mask, getting it ready for a design.
